Mega Quarry Alert
Did you know that an American Hedge Fund has
bought property in Melancthon township (north of Shelbourne) and is planning
to operate a mega quarry on the site?
The site of the proposed quarry lies
over 7,000 acres of prime farmland and over an aquifer that forms the headwaters
of five major river systems that are the source of drinking water for more
than a million people. Quarries are not usually required to complete an
environmental assessment before obtaining a license to operate. In this
case, public concern has convinced the Ministry of Natural Resources to work
with the Ministry of the Environment to require a full environmental assessment.
What
can you do?
