Beverley Boudreau
You Will Have
to Speak Up - and Other Deaf Adventures
|
Beverley will speak about her experience growing up as
a woman in a silent world. She will also discuss the impact of
legislation, in particular The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities
Act (AODA, 2005), and what this can and cannot accomplish in terms
of creating a just, inclusive and equally accessible society.
...Beverley was born with a profound hearing loss and
has become active in her advocacy for rights of the deaf community.
She has an Honours BA & MA from the University of Windsor. She
is the immediate Past President of CFUW St. Catherines and presently
communications officer at Brock University.
...
From our January 2009 Guelph Line:
One of the afternoon speakers was Beverley Boudreau,
the President of CFUW St. Catharines. A defining characteristic of
Beverley, which you might not notice unless she’s with signers, is
that she is completely deaf, from birth. Beverley is an advocate for
more inclusive access, such as better signage and fewer stairs through
Access for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).
Kay Stubbert, our Program Chair, has booked Beverley
as our September general meeting speaker.

Jane
Galbraith
The Grief Process and Our Culture's Lack of Validation
of this Process
|
Jane’s background is in nursing and she has a BSCN from
McMaster University. She has worked in the community health
field including hospice palliative care for over 20 years. All of
her experiences have led her to authoring this book.
...The grief I experienced after the death of my mother
in 1993 had an enormous impact on me. This event created the realization
that in the next few years all my friends would be facing this same
life experience. My main concern is that this generation is not prepared
and will be going through this together in numbers never seen before.
This will have an enormous effect on the workplace and
relationships in general if we don't start bringing grief out of
the "unmentionable" category. Baby Boomers have an opportunity to make
a huge change in the way society deals with this life altering event.
About the book:
Ninety million baby boomers will, in the next 20 years,
face the loss of one or both parents. This book discusses society's
lack of acceptance of grief in general and the way past generations
have taught us to deal with this life event. "Time will heal.", "They
had a good life" are some examples of empty phrases so often used when
dealing with loss. The reader is taken on a journey in this book by
providing support and understanding of the grieving process. In this
writer's opinion this generation, known as the baby boomers, through
the sheer force of their numbers, has the ability to make positive changes
in the way this and succeeding generations handle grief.
The grieving process is explained; how it differs for
all of us; that there is no "right" way to grieve and that the pain
of grieving cannot be avoided. Suggestions are offered for managing
grief. Ceremonies and rituals surround death and grieving is discussed
and suggestions about how to structure a meaningful ceremony to honour
loved ones are given.
The book makes it clear that change can occur in our
society, with this generation, that will allow people to manage grief
in a constructive way; that sharing experience can allow others to
be more prepared and more open in dealing with this life altering experience
and that people can find comfort in knowing that others have had similar
experiences. This book allows a glimpse into what we will all face and
some strategies to cope with our loss, in an easy to read, personal narrative
format.

Update on the Children's Charter
|
In 2007 CFUW Guelph signed the charter
developed by the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Report Card

The Charter makes a compelling statement
about our collective intent
to support and advocate for the rights of children.

Tim Eastwood
Preparing for the Sandwich Years
The "Sandwich Years" can be an enormously demanding and stressful
period in our lives when we care for our children (and/or grandchildren)and
parents (and/or grandparents)at the same time. While this is not a gender
specific issue, statistics show that women tend to bear the majority of
the responsibility in this role. Tim will be discussing the financial,
emotional and practical issues that are common to this stage of life, and
he will provide resources and ideas that will help you as you navigate
through the challenges that lie ahead.
Tim is an associate investment advisor and financial planner with
BMO Nesbitt Burns in Guelph. In addition to holding the designation Fellow
of the Canadian Securities Institute, he has obtained the Certified Financial
Planner (CFP) and the Canadian Investment Manager (CIM) designation. Most
recently, Tim earned the Certified Senior Advisor,(CSA)designation through
the Canadian Academy of Senior Advisors.
Tim is passionate about golf and hockey and plays both
as frequently as he can. He resides with his family in Rockwood.
