Presence in the Community

Civic Affairs

For nearly 40 years, CFUW has had a place in the minds of the citizens of Guelph through its Civic Affairs Interest Group. This group has been instrumental in shaping policies locally through its ongoing interest and involvement in all aspects of the quality of life in Guelph.

It has actively sought, encouraged, and supported the membership of women on City Council,
on public and private boards, and in provincial and federal politics as well.

For the 2008-2009 schedule of meetings, the Civic Affairs group plans to invite city councillors, as well as guest speakers, to our meetings to give them an opportunity to tell us a little about what the current concerns are at city hall. As well, they will bring us up to date with their particular areas of responsibility.

Reflection Garden

For our millennium project, CFUW erected a quiet memorial on the grounds of the Boat House on Gordon Street in honour of the 14 women massacred in Montreal at the École Polytechnique on December 6, 1989.

We invite members of the community and their visitors to sit there peacefully
by the river and reflect on the loss of the promising young lives.

December 6 Memorial Dinner

Since 2002, CFUW Clubs of Kitchener-Waterloo, Cambridge, and Guelph have
held
memorial dinners to raise funds for the CFUW Polytechnique Scholarship.

On this day, all women who have died by violence are remembered and honoured.

Scientists in School Guelph

This initiative brings science to life for elementary students through hands-on natural and applied science and technology programs. By involving children as scientists under the guidance on enthusiastic scientists, the aim is to inspire a greater understanding and
interest in science and to expose students to a variety of scientific rôle models,
many of whom are female.

Begun in 1989 by CFUW Ajax-Pickering, the program has expanded to reach over 480,000 students in 15 school boards in 2006/7.

In 2001, Scientists in School received the
Michael Smith Award for Excellence in Science Promotion:

The Michael Smith Awards honour individuals and groups who make an outstanding contribution to the promotion of science in Canada, through activities encouraging popular interest in science or developing science abilities. Two recipients (one individual and one group) may be selected for the awards each year.

CFUW Guelph launched a chapter in 1999; to date, celebrating the 10th Anniversary,
presenters have reached over 110,025 students students in 4,075 classrooms
in Guelph and area.
