CFUW Guelph - The Power of Women Working Together

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I come to a meeting and see if the club is a good fit for me?
Yes! We'd love to have you come as our guest. Our general meetings are held at 7:15 PM, the fourth Tuesday of each month from September to April at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church, 161 Norfolk Street Guelph. Our annual general meeting in May is a ticketed event that includes a dinner.

You are a "university women’s club", what if I'm not a college or university graduate?
You do not need to be a college or university graduate or a university student to join.

Who Can Join CFUW Guelph?

CFUW Guelph welcomes all women who support its purposes; the pursuit of knowledge, the promotion of education and the improvement of the status of women and girls and human rights.

How Do I Join CFUW Guelph?

Download the Membership Form, fill it in and send it, along with your cheque, to our Membership Chair at the address listed on the back.

Why do we pay fees to CFUW National and Ontario Council?
Effective advocacy requires careful research and preparation. Clearly this cannot be achieved on a national and international scale without offices and a staff. The financial support of member clubs, through dues, maintains these administrative structures, slim as they are, thus assuring the independence and respect accorded to self-funded organizations.

What are the Benefits of Belonging to CFUW Guelph?

You are linked to approx 200 women at the local level, close to 9,000 women at the national level and through IFUW women in affliate clubs in 62 countries. CFUW has special consultative status at the United Nations and is represented at the Sectoral Committee on Education at the Canadian Sub-Committee for UNESCO. There are opportunities for both advocacy and social activities at the local level and advocacy at all other levels. CFUW Guelph holds monthly meetings with informative speakers from Sept – Nov and Jan – May. We also have more than 30 Interest Groups that members belong to.

How Much Does it Cost to be a Member?

The membership fee in 2014-15 is $120 for regular members and $35 for student members. If you are already a member in another CFUW Club in the 2014-15 year, you may pay a dual member fee of $45. The regular and dual member fees include a $10 donation to the CFUW Guelph Scholarship Fund and you will receive a receipt for income tax purposes.

What if I Don’t Join in September?

The CFUW Guelph membership year runs from Sept 1 to Aug 31. Dues for returning members are to be paid by Sept 1. New members may join at any time, but since Interest Groups and General meetings start in September, you will be able to get the most of your membership the earlier you join. All members paying dues prior to Sept 30 will have their contact information printed in the CFUW Guelph Directory which is distributed at the October General meeting.

How Do I Join an Interest Group?

The reverse side of the membership form contains a list of CFUW Guelph interest groups; check the box beside any that you would like to join, Our Membership chair will give your name and contact information to the Convenor of the group and they will contact you. If a group is not able to accept members, the Membership chair will contact you to determine if there are other groups you are interested in, or perhaps to try and set up a new group similar to the one that is full. Since many of our groups meet in members’ homes, there may be a maximum number that a group can accommodate.
