New: A Retrospective

Sparkly Star 2009-2010 Programme Sparkly Star

Gift Fairy

Dear Interest Group Chairs,

Would your Interest group like to participate in the Chalmers Community Services Christmas Gift Bag program? This registered charity offers emergency food, clothes, etc. to local people. It is in need of about 250 gift bags (37% go to women). This is a worthwhile local CFUW effort in service for others. Please let me know immediately if your group can make up 1 or 2 bags and bring them to the next general meeting on Nov. 24th.  I will contact Chalmers to tell them how many bags we can provide and will make sure they are taken to the centre after the meeting.

1 cloth GIFT BAG for a woman should be filled with these 16 items:

- one pair gloves
- one pair socks
- hand towel
- wash cloth
- regular size shampoo
- regular size personal bar soap
- comb or brush
- toothbrush
- toothpaste
- powder or talc
- shower gel, body wash or bubble bath
- antiperspirant/deodorant
- bag of disposable razors
- candy treat or gum
- chocolate candy
- small jar of coffee, tea bags, or hot chocolate packages

It would be wonderful if we could make up at least 10 bags for women.

Thank you for your help.
June Ayrhart

Our Raison d'Être

The Canadian Federation of University Women was founded in 1919 as a Canadian counterpart to the International Federation of University Women, whose purpose was to emphasize women's role in social reconstruction and the prevention of war. In 1995 there were over 100 CFUW clubs in Canada (and in 2009 there are 118 clubs), in every province, with a total membership of approximately 10,000 women graduates representing all ages and academic disciplines. CFUW promotes the involvement of women individually and collectively in professional, economic and political life, and is concerned with encouraging women scholars and safeguarding the rights of women.

Local clubs are involved in community-based and charitable activities, and participate in the federation's work. The CFUW continues to compile submissions, briefs and resolutions directed to government task forces and commissions on a wide range of issues of interest to women, including child support tax, women in universities, international issues, pensions, education, the environment, peace, justice and human rights.

...from the Canadian Encyclopedia Online, 2009

Effective advocacy requires careful research and preparation. Clearly this cannot be achieved on a national and international scale without offices and a staff. Our dues maintain these administrative structures, slim as they are, thus assuring the independence and respect accorded to self-funded organizations. The financial support of clubs like ours makes all of this possible.

When You Receive a Warning or an Appeal in an E-mail

Before forwarding any warning or appeal, especially if "send this to as many of your friends as possible immediately" is contained in the message, try going to one of the sites below and typing key words (usually from the subject line of the email) into the search engine and see what comes up.

You will be able to determine if the warning/appeal is true and should be forwarded, or, if it is a hoax and should just be deleted.

So Successful has the Snopes site become that now even erroneous e-mails include the line, "I have already Snoped this. It is true."  In fact, the opposite usually is true. If the email in question includes that line, it is all the more reason for you to check it out yourself on the Snopes site before forwarding it!
